GameStorm 19 is done! Yayayayayyay! Four days of approx. 1600 people playing games at a Hotel in Portland Oregon...and it wrapped up yesterday :)
Of course, my work is not yet done, but the urgency has dropped a bit. These last three months, while fighting snow and overtime, I have also been in the crunch time for getting my part of the convention planning done. My department was Hotel. My job, to coordinate between the convention and the Hotel itself, to make sure that we got the right tables in the right rooms (and kept the Fire Marshall happy), reserve rooms for the Guests of Honor, that staff got the right room rates, and to keep an eye on our overall room night commitments.
This is harder than it sounds. Banquet and Event Orders...where the tables go, water stations, trash and recycling, figuring out which Events goes in which rooms, which suites are being used for which purposes...I needed to coordinate with the Chair, Dealers, Registration, Hospitality, PR (info desk), Operations (office, con watch), Industry (swag, GOH liaisons), and Events (Boardgaming, Minis, MIB, Game Library, RPGs, ORCs, LARP, CCGs, Indie Hurricane!, Console Gaming/LAN, and Game Lab). Each of these departments (and sub-departments) is run by a different volunteer. Each of these volunteers wants the best for their area. Each of these volunteers is an individual with their own schedules and time commitments and availability to respond.
Yes, I am a volunteer cat-herder. LOL.
But, it is done and done now! Our first time in a new hotel, so I have notes and pictures to make changes for next year. Even before our Sun Break (we don't have a Dead Dog. After the Storm is over comes the Sun Break *grin*) and at the wrap up meeting with the hotel this morning, we were already planning changes and tweaks to make next year better. (We call this SMOFing. SMOF is Secret Masters of Fandom. This is the Meta activity of not only running conventions, but talking about conventions and people who run conventions so we learn from others what went wrong and how to improve our own....It's actually a lot of fun! Hearing the fun (or horror) stories about the behind the scenes stuff that goes on when trying to run a convention. Things that don't (we pray) affect the attendees, but are lessons to learn from for the committees.
And what of my weekend, though? Did I have any fun, in and among all this stress and conventioning? Actually yes :) Though boy, did my feet hurt from all the walking I did! I lead three tours to introduce people to the hotel, I taught two sessions of two different games (Roll for the Galaxy and Mysterium) which were a lot of fun, I played two other games...neither of which were scheduled though, LOL, and started to learn a third, and I look forward to playing it again. I bought a game for my niece for her birthday, and for my own, I got a foot massage! I also got to see friends that I only get to see at conventions and spend a bit of time with friends that I usually don't have time to, even when we're local :)
I'll post again, soon. That is my intention, as I want to do so more frequently and now my brain is not as full. LOL, at least until I start work on the next convention!

Have I mentioned how much I love the rain?
So last week, Portland Oregon received about 6-12" of snow, depending on where you were. The official word was 8". Portland Oregon is not built for snow. Snow belongs in the lovely nearby mountains where you can visit it when you want to. Some even like to slide down them on little bits of wood. Yay for them.
Portland Oregon is built for drainage. Our streets slope. Especially in the hilly areas. Just for the record, we have a lot of hilly areas in Portland Oregon. Add snow, then, just for kicks, turn part of that into packed snow and ice, and it gets...messy. Seattle Washington took pity on us and sent us snow plows. Seattle Washington is such a lovely town, really love them!
Portland Oregon has never prayed for rain so hard than over the last few days, I swear. Yesterday it was predicted we would get an ice storm. People were resigned. Public transports were full.
Then the rain came. Lovely, non-freezing, non-icy rain. The major streets are mostly clear. I had to walk my scooter off my street, but was able to ride most of the way to work quite safely. Coming home, after a day of rain, I rode all the way to the store (Yay, provisions! And yes, Pharmacy, I heard you the first five times you texted me to tell me my prescriptions were ready!), and then almost back home, having to walk my scooter down my street. Hardest part was getting back into the parking lot! Sheesh!
So here I am, home, safe, sound, mostly dry again (and boy is the wind and rain going nuts outside!), with foooood and heat and stuff. I deeply appreciate how fortunate I am! :)

Oh, wait...it was Saturday that was quiet. Didn't do much yesterday. Tidied a tiny bit, messed with files on my computer, stayed up way too late...
Today, okay, I got up late, but since then I've tweaked some more BEOs (table maps) for GameStorm and sent them out to the relevant parties, finished the BEO for the GameDay on Feb 6th, stripped my bed, rotated my mattress, took a shower, trimmed my toenails, got rid of stuff in the bathroom that had outlived its useful-by-me lifespan, prepared my trash to be taken out when next I have outdoor clothes on, made some lovely lists of other things to do....and now I think I will sit and eat something. It's almost 5:30pm, that's a good time for breakfast, right? LOL!
It's slowly getting there, anyway.
Unlike the snow, which is still outside. Lovely layers of ice everywhere too. Bleh. Not sure about getting to work tomorrow on the holiday. And my, people do stare when you have a cough on the bus, don't they? :( I mean, I totally get that, they don't know if I'm contagious or not! But it really makes you feel unloved.
Rains are supposed to come back though. Hopefully that will melt the ice!
Oo, my food is ready! Have a great rest of the afternoon! :) I still need to remake my bed, so I know there is more productivity in store for me, like it or not. LOL!

Tuesday night about 11 inches or so of snow fell on my town. It's not the record, mind you. 5th largest snowfall in recorded history is all. But there is a ton of snow, and yesterday nothing was moving. Today, the transit trains and buses are doing much better, but I'm still recovering from my cold last week. When I ventured outside this morning, the cold immediately attacked my lungs, causing a coughing fit. So I called out, second day in a row.
I hate calling out :( It leaves my office short-handed and makes me feel like I'm letting down the team :( But it would take a walk, a bus ride, another walk, a train ride, and then another walk that would be longer than the first two combined, just to get me to the office. Just from stepping outside I am coughing, all that exertion in the cold would kill my lungs. So, here I sit, on my couch, feeling rather like a failure.
I'm ready, though. Doggone it. I have those little things you put over your shoes for traction, I've got spare socks and my headphones in my bag, I've learned that the gear I use for scooter riding in the cold is more than a match for simply walking or standing around...I don't have boots, though, so the deep snow is going to kill my ankles, but that's what the dry socks are for!
And just to mock me, the sun is shining. It looks beautiful out, with all that snow. But I'm still coughing from earlier. So, no. I'm staying inside, taking my cough meds, and trying to get better as fast as I can. Perhaps tomorrow.

I've had a fairly productive weekend...so far :) Night is still young, who knows!
Yesterday:
I typed up my resolutions
Watched the Batman Trilogy, followed by a Sherlock Holmes spoof called "Without a Clue." It was rather amusing, too many oddball takes on Holmes aren't!
Went through three bags of papers, turning most of them into recycling
Tidied my kitchen up a bit, washed all my pots.
Finished organizing my DVDs (and realized I need better storage that two of the tiny units I have provide. Very flimsy, tsk.)
I started my "garage sale" box for the summer (including some duplicate DVDs, LOL)
Tidied my pile of recycling a touch
Finished organizing my paints and the things I want to paint in their cabinet. It's not perfect, but better than sitting in a bag on my only chair
I also moved my magnetic note board to a wall where I can use it (rearrangements last year meant I couldn't easily get to it anymore.
Washed my support hose
and I prepped my meds for the week. I have tiny little tins that I take to work with the morning meds in them. They are carefully labelled, "Perky's Not Mints" :)
Today:
I got up. :D
Ran my dishwasher
Worked on GameStorm stuff most of the day. Created the BEOs for Boardgaming, Minis, CCGs, the Office, Panels (that was the easiest, LOL) and am now working on ORCs and RPGs. Plus I created a table count spreadsheet, and a staff rate rooming list. All while sitting on my couch....forgetting to eat all day. >.<
I also managed to clear off my kitchen table a tiny bit more and discovered things in one kitchen cabinet that not only had I forgotten were there, but were able to get rid of or consolidate some of.
I never feel I was properly productive at home when most of the work I do is on the computer. I think it is because the clutter can see me. And it judges me. >.> Darn clutter. But I'm getting there :) And my cough is improving! Yay! Plus now I have rice steaming so I can have dinner :)
Hope everyone else had a constructive day as well!

Perky's 2017 Resolutions:
0. Be happy!
1. Get my passport! I intend to travel in 2918!
2. Save money for trip or pay off enough bills that I have credit available :D
3. Clear space for a new roommate, coming in September. Yes, that is nine months. No, I am not getting a kid, LOL! Good friend, though :)
4. Be healthier :)
I have a working copy of this with some finer details on how to achieve some of these.
Now, how did I do on my 2016 Resolutions?
Be Happy
--Done! :D I am happy!
Continue to lose weight
--....well, at least I didn't go up.
Finish Three Major Projects
--My bathroom has been repainted
--I rearranged my living room
--I reorganized my hall closet. No, really, that was a thing! I also reorganized my kitchen. Small steps, but still.
Find Love
--Romantic love, no. But I love my friends, I love my job, I love my scooter :D
Get a passport
--Uhm, well, there's a reason it's on 2017's resolution.
Hope you all had a great Season of Holidays and that the New Year brings you joy, health, and happiness!! :D

Stress! LOL!
Tomorrow is when the busiest part of my department's year kicks into overdrive. For the next three weeks, it is Open Enrollment time. Such fun, really.
This weekend was Kumoricon. I was the FanFic Coordinator (I judged the FanFic contest, in other words); I ran panels on JDramas, Art to Fic/Fic to Art, Do you want to write a slashfic? (Totally a crack panel, I swear), and Elements of Good Storytelling; and I was part of the Craft Staff, helping with a Kumihimo panel and doing two stints in the Cat Ear Making booth. It was a lot of fun, but quite exhausting. I finished my slides for the panels last Thursday, and didn't finish the judging until Sunday morning! And yes, I am totally hoping to do it all again next year :)
In three weeks is Orycon. That's the Science Fiction convention that I am doing Hotel for. It is a lot harder than doing Hotel for GameStorm (which I am also doing), I must say. I will be very glad when that part of it is over. I'm also doing NINE panels! Holy cow! The one I have to say that I'm looking forward to the most though is SF Haiku :) Why should we be limited to prose? :)
Tomorrow is Halloween and I haven't even had a chance to think about my costume yet. I'll through together something, likely the apron dress I wore last year. It's at least pretty. It's a white rattlesnake print :) Naturally it will be raining. Just hope my skirt is okay for the ride in on my scooter. Sometimes the hems get a bit damp.
Anyway, that's what I'm up to right now. One convention down, heading into Open Enrollment. I am hoping that my stress levels go down a bit now, though, since I'm down to only two conventions for a bit ;) I do this for fun, you know! LOL!
I'll try to post a little more often. *hugs the flist*

I think I managed to save the gumbo. With the addition of some cayenne and paprika, which it needed anyway because it had no kick, plus some peanut butter and cinnamon, I think I've reduced the burnt flavor to mildly noticeable aftertaste. I think. Well, I'm the one that will be eating it. And I've learned my lesson about simmering in a large stock pot and naps. :)
( Lots MoreCollapse )
( Lots MoreCollapse )
Not sure, but here it is :)
I forgot to mention that I also deep fried 4 pounds of tofu the other day. LOL! Only way I like tofu....and I LOVE it like this :) It is in my freezer too now.
As are five containers of beef stew. I have one double sized container in my fridge with the dregs and the extra sauce. Not sure what to do with it, might just eat it. (Shocking, I know!)
Took a shower at the start of my day today...weird choice, considering how messy I've been.
Got Gumbo in a pot on the stove and chicken soup in the crockpot now. Woot!
Gumbo was as easy as I fortunately remembered.
stick of butter and 1/2 cup of flour for the roux. Cook that up.
Mix in a TON of spices, whatever you like.
I had 1 T Garlic powder, 1 T Onion powder, 1 T Italian Herbs, 1/4 T Celery seed, 1 T of a spicy blend, 1 T Tarragon, 1 T Cumin, 1 T Coriander. I'm out of Cayenne and paprika, darn it.
Popped in my cooked, cubed chicken and some cooked mild italian sausage too.
Added a pound of baby carrots
About 8 medium sized potatoes (whites)
12 cups of chicken stock/bullion
8 packs of hot sauce and the remainder of the salsa I had in the fridge
1/4 c of Worcestershire sauce.
Bring to a boil, then reduce and cook.
I'll cook that until the potatoes and carrots are edible, then add a package of frozen sliced okra and cook all of that until it dissolves.
The chicken soup was simply:
Plop frozen carrots, spinach, green beans in the crockpot. Add two sliced zucchini, some chicken, onion powder, garlic powder, italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and enough chicken stock/bullion to cover it all. Turn on the crockpot and wait! :D
We'll see how those turn out!
Also ran my dishwasher, scrubbed my tub, and washed out my bathroom sink. Look at me be all domestic! :D

I currently have no uncooked meat in my apartment. LOL!
In the crockpot, cooking for flavor now, is a beef stew I made the other day. It had a nice finish, but no flavor in the first bites, so, at the advice of a co-worker, I added a bottle of Guinness. Hope it works! Otherwise that's a waste of a lot of tasty ingredients and a true shame :(
I have the chicken cooked up now for my gumbo. I may have cooked too much....which is why I am now intending to make a chicken soup, too. We'll see how it goes :) I have spinach and a couple of zucchini, so soup sounded good :)
Oh! And today, I walked up the stairs at work! Very exciting for me! I'd been walking down them more and more, but that's the first time up from the first to second floor :) And my ribs, while still sore, have allowed me to start doing crunches in the morning again. Woooo!
I have even finished putting my clean clothes away! Look at me be all productive and stuff!

Today I woke up with a sore arm. Apparently I did something yesterday called, "exercise." Not sure about this thing, it really makes you hurt the next day! My elbow hurt, my wrist, my shoulder, and various parts in between! Guess if you do all the stuff I did yesterday...that counts as exercise! LOL
I finished off the day with a nice shower, then hit the sack. Today, after work, I made a big thing of rice, then divided it up with the two curries. Now my freezer contains 6 containers of casserole, 2 random pasta bakes, one left over pasta, and 7 curries. Woot! I'm almost ready for you summer! I have the stuff now to make the beef stew, too. I stopped at the store on the way home and got celery, beef and chicken stock. The beef stew I will try to do tomorrow, then I'll need to buy more potatoes before I can make the gumbo. Plus I REALLY want to let my arm recover for a bit. LOL! So sore!
I also took out my trash today and put away three items from my clean laundry stash ;) (Don't judge me, at least they're clean!)
Now it is time to pay a couple of bills, then off to bed. Yay!
*hugs everyone*

I stopped at the store on the way home and got celery, beef and chicken stock. The beef stew I will try to do tomorrow, then I'll need to buy more potatoes before I can make the gumbo. Plus I REALLY want to let my arm recover for a bit. LOL! So sore!
I also took out my trash today and put away three items from my clean laundry stash ;) (Don't judge me, at least they're clean!)
Now it is time to pay a couple of bills, then off to bed. Yay!
*hugs everyone*
Heck with finishing catching up first...I will start posting more frequently, darn it!
So far today I have:
Slept in.
Unloaded my dishwasher.
Reloaded my dishwasher.
Am running my dishwasher.
Did some toning exercises.
Wiped down my stovetop, oven face, microwave face and countertops.
Planned:
Research a good beef stew.
Make a casserole.
Find my gumbo recipe.
Make my gumbo.
Make curry, maybe two.
Freeze 98% of them for dinners when it is too hot to cook this summer.
Finish catching up on LJ
Work on catching up on my downloads.
Burn more disks to free up space on my externals.
Unload dishwasher.
Put away clean clothes.
Shower.
Okay, I might not get all of that done, but I am going to try :) Oo, I should probably eat at some point too. Hm...It will have to wait until the dishwasher is done, most of my pots are in it. LOL!
How is everyone on my flist doing? Is it summer where you are yet? (except for those of you in the Southern Hemisphere, hope you aren't freezing your toes off!)
Update:
Found two interesting beef stew recipes and now need to go to the store.
Didn't find my gumbo recipe, so I'll fake it and write it down.
Cooked a ton of chicken.
Unloaded the dishwasher.
Cleaned out my deep fryer and refilled it (so I can make yummy fried tofu!)
*hugs everyone*
Second Update:
Cooked the beef for the beef stew.
Cooked the hamburger for the casserole.
Made casserole! Woot!
Made two different curries...both with chicken, potatoes, carrots, green beans and peas. LOL But they're different, honest!
Got a little caught up with LJ? I think I'm only a week behind now!
*more hugs*

Hi!!!
Not dead! Yay!
It's been 11 weeks since my accident...and far too many since my last update. Sheesh! I know some of you follow me on Facebook (you can search for Perkyandproud, no really!) so you have an idea of what I've been up to.
Ribs are still healing. Things were going great until I got that cold last week. Darn cough. Ribs no like cough!! But I didn't need to get prescription strength cough meds because...over the counter cough meds and the painkillers I still have from my accident work juuuust fine as a substitute! :D
Shoulder blade seems healed just fine though. Yay!! This means that I am going to try to wean myself off of using the walker at work. I usually only use it coming in, lunch, and going home. It will be interesting to see how my stamina reacts. I'm hoping it will bounce back quickly, darn it! :)
Leg. Finally it is starting to finish healing. I thought it was doing fine, then two weeks ago I felt stabbing pain when I would wear my support hose. Turns out I had an infection. Three more days of antibiotics...hope it works! :) I've been joking about putting googly eyes on my leg for an upcoming convention, because it really does look like a wide smile. Heh :)
Let's see, other stuff. GameStorm ate my brain for a while. That's the gaming convention in March. I was the hotel liaison and mostly managed it well, despite my hospital time and getting back to work and not being able to go to the meetings and all. But it was fun. :D I got a copy of Firefly Fluxx because it came out that same weekend...totally had to have it! :D
Oh, and my birthday was last week! Specifically it was Easter Sunday! So, rather than spend the day home alone moping, I went to the zoo :) I even got a friend to come with me! I got us both those mobility scooters ('cause the zoo with two people on walkers is sloooooow) and we just zipped around. I have lots of pictures, eventually I'll put them up! LOL Glad LadyD could come, it was indeed more fun with a friend :) Ooo, the new Elephant Lands was open too! Wow, so much more space now! The elephants all looked happy, too :)
Today was finally the day I got back on my scooter, too. Had to dust it off a bit though! Surprisingly I did not need to jump it! I mean, really surprising! I went eight days once and had to jump it, this was 11 weeks! But I got my new mirror finally, so I could safely ride again. Need to fix one of the handle grips though, it is pulled out a bit. But it is so tight I can't push it back on! And my ski mask that was inside the seat of my bike is all moldy! Ew! Other than that though, everything seems just fine :) I'll practice a bit more in the evenings, I think, when it isn't raining this week, and we'll see how next week goes! I *might* be ready to start riding to work again!
So that is how I've been and what I've been up to. You will notice I didn't mention housework in there. I've been doing the bare minimum and making lists of all the stuff I need to do. I might need to hire someone, darn it. At least get me back on neutral footing! I keep trying to convince friends to come over to help me at least go through stuff, but so far, only one taker. We got my bedroom picked up, it was lovely :)
Oo, that's not entirely true, I had another couple friends come and help because my computer was being a snot. He fixed the graphics card and hooked up both my monitors and she put together a lamp I bought several months ago. I have light!! Yayayayy! :)
Other than that, just been sleeping a lot, trying to heal. Still have some to do, but I will try not to go so long without posting, okay? *hugs my flist*

It's been three weeks since my accident. I got to come home from the care center yesterday.
Thank heavens for friends. I had one take me and all my stuff home, which involved several trips for her, then she went and bought my groceries for me...she even spent her own dime calling me to clarify a few things on my list (she has a pay as you go phone, she has to like you a lot to call multiple times. I truly appreciate that I'm on that short list!)
Today another pair of friends came over. For the paltry gas and lunch money I was able to get the one to accept, they installed two bars in my bathroom so that I can shower safely, moved my old computer, shifted my desk down, repaired a cabinet door, and fixed my hanging basket so it is secure and looks better! All in time for the other one to get back home to watch the Super Bowl ;) Plus they're fun conversationalists :)
Last night I slept in my own bed. I appreciate the care center, I really do...if you ever are in need of a care center in the Portland area, I cannot recommend them highly enough...but the mattresses there are more firm than I like. My bed is queen size, soft and plush, and smells right. LOL I napped on my back for a bit in the evening, then later went to bed and slept on my right side. I woke up refreshed...and stiff and sore. LOL I know part of it was from overdoing it yesterday, unpacking a bit from the care center. The other part was sleeping in one position all night. Third part was from sleeping in a position I haven't in over three weeks. But oh, it was worth it :)
Today I am looking around at all the clutter in my apartment, wondering how I let it get to this state. Me, the organizer, the person who helps other people deal with their clutter!! Guess I need to practice what I preach for a bit ;) So I'll make a few lists, start getting stuff figured out.
But it is nice to be home. Tomorrow I have a doctor's appointment to hopefully see when I can go back to work. I have good news in that my blood sugars are way down and so is my blood pressure! LOL
Thank you all for the good thoughts and prayers. I deeply appreciate each one of my flist, especially when I was stuck in the care center with very little to do and I could read of your exploits! :D *hugs you all*

Finally I am able to log on with my phone!
So I was in an accident last Sunday. My scooter and I were going across a bridge, parallel to trolley tracks. I went to turn right...and my rear wheel slid on the wet metal of the tracks.
I have several broken ribs, a broken scapula (left shoulder blade), and a 17cm laceration on my right leg. This is where I look quite pitiful! I am sore and bruised and in a care facility currently as I have no one at home to fuss over me!
I do not have a concussion or anything, have no fear for my brain!
More news to come as I get it!
*gently hugs you all*

Before I look ahead, I just wanted to take a moment and review and reflect :)

So here is my day:
Went to work.
Was supposed to have a therapy appointment today to measure how my legs are doing, but my therapist was sick. (When I canceled the time off request, I said, "My doctor is sick." The request email back said, "They aren't supposed to do that!" and had a smiley face. Have I mentioned how much I love where I work?
The Department Boss is visiting for the Ever So Often Communication meetings this week (I got to go to one yesterday, very informative, rather fun!) and today was the Department BBQ and potluck. I wasn't together enough to bring anything, but I intend to next time!
After lunch was my monthly 1:1 with my Supervisor. He's a great guy. Tough, but fair. Eats the peppermints I leave out for people on my desk, too. (Soft ones, easy to eat quick before the next call comes in.) Yeah, I have something to work on. But overall, I think I'm doing well.
Trying to organize a couple of things at work. Have to keep pushing back Bowling Night, but I am not discouraged! :) Then today I sent out invites for our little department (we're a part of the big Department) to participate in a fun new walking challenge :)
After work I stopped off at the library and dropped off a couple of books...and paid my fine. Darn it. LOL Then I gassed up the ol' scooter. Between the two I spent just under $4. You may all now envy me for multiple reasons ;) LOL!
At the store I picked up my prescription, something for dinner tomorrow, some soda water, and some cottage cheese for my daily breakfast.
Helped a neighbor find her phone (called it until she found it and answered), and now I am sitting here typing as my dinner cooks. I got some "Tasty Brown Sauce" from Uwajimaya's last weekend, put it in with stew meat, potatoes and carrots. Yay dinner!
Okay, I'm going to burn some more stuff to CD that I've already seen, play a game or two, then watch more of a cute little drama when one of my friends comes online in a bit.
Hope everyone else is having a fabulous day! *hugs the flist*

Seriously, the longer I go before I update the harder it is to do it! (In fact, I wrote this all out about a week ago...look at me procrastinate!) So now I'm just going to grab that bull by the horns and do a little dance! :D
